Carlyle’s Applus+ buys Australian inspection firm JDA
The Carlyle Group has acquired John Davidson and Associates (JDA), an Australian extraction industry services provider, through its portfolio company Applus+. The size of the transaction wasn’t disclosed but JDA had revenues of around EUR25 million ($32.9 million) in 2011.
The acquisition is intended to allow Applus+, a Spanish inspection, testing, certification and quality control company with a global presence, to expand its business in Australia. JDA, which has offices in Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea and a staff of 150, supplies inspection services to the oil and gas, mining, construction and engineering industries.
"JDA offers us the opportunity to consolidate the service we provide to our customers in Australia and Indonesia. Moving forward, Australia will become one of the company's key markets," said Fernando Basabe, Applus+ CEO, in a statement. "JDA's long experience will help us strengthen the positioning of Applus+ services, as well as allowing us to enter a new market such as Papua New Guinea, where major oil and gas infrastructure investments are taking place."
Carlyle bought Applus in July 2007 and has since grown revenues by 78% to €1.2 billion last year. The company has made 20 acquisitions worldwide, including Germany's BKW, US firm Kiefner & Associates, Brazil-based Qualitec, and Velosi, which has a strong focus on Australasia, Middle East and Africa.
