Japan healthcare AI start-up Ubie closes $26m Series C

Japan’s Ubie, a healthcare technology start-up that uses artificial intelligence (AI) for symptom-checking questionnaires, has raised USD 26.2m in Series C funding from local investors.
New backers include Norinchukin Capital, an affiliate of Norinchukin Bank, NVenture Capital, a subsidiary of financial technology provider NEC Capital Solutions, Dai-ichi Life Insurance, and Egg Forward, a human resources consultancy and active tech investor. Pharmaceuticals maker Suzuken re-upped. It brings total funding to date to USD 59.8m.
Ubie describes itself as one of few medical data players globally that offers direct contact with both patients and medical institutions.
Its questionnaire aims to serve patients by analysing symptoms and guiding them to the most appropriate sources of treatment. This service is also said to support medical professionals by providing them with information in areas that are not their speciality and streamlining care processes.
The service leverages a database of about 50,000 medical articles created by more than 50 active physicians. It has been introduced to more than 1,000 medical institutions and has 5m monthly users across Japan and the US.
"Not only in Japan, but also in other countries, the current healthcare system is suffering from various losses due to the fragmentation of information held by patients, medical institutions, and pharmaceutical companies,” Ubie co-founder and CEO Yoshinori Abe said in a statement.
“Ubie already has business with more than 20 major pharmaceutical companies in Japan and other countries, and this brings Ubie closer to realising its mission to develop a healthcare guide for everyone, both in Japan and the US.”
