Faering leads $40m Series C for India fintech start-up
Indian private equity firm Faering Capital has led a $40 million Series C round for stock trading and thematic portfolio platform Smallcase, with support from Amazon and Premji Invest.
Sequoia Capital India, Blume Ventures, Beenext, DSP Group, Arkam Ventures, WEH Ventures, and HDFC Bank, all of which joined a $14 million Series B last year, also participated. Sequoia India provided a $7 million Series A in 2018.
Smallcase allows three million users to make investments of less than INR5,000 ($67) in thematic baskets of stocks or exchange traded funds with a single click. It claims to facilitate $2.5 billion of investments a year.
The investment themes – chosen by various local consulting firms, brokerages, and analysts – can be browsed according to strategy categories such as “momentum” and “technical.” These strategies are further segmented into baskets such as “Rising Rural Demand” and “The PE List,” which focuses on companies in which PE and VC firms have a high shareholding.
“This financing increases our responsibility to continue building simple, transparent and delightful experiences and platforms, while delivering more value to our users and partners,” the company said in a statement. “Our true success will lie in developing the core building blocks for every investor’s portfolio and becoming a key part of their toolkit.”
Investors have identified a substantial rise in retail investor demand in India’s public markets, especially in technology-related businesses. This is believed to be driven by pandemic lockdowns, the increasing ubiquity of technology brands, and greater familiarity with tech business models. The phenomenon has been connected with a recent spate of IPOs, which is expected to gather pace.
