India's Teachmint raises $16.5m Series A
Indian education technology provider Teachmint has raised a $16.5 million Series A round led by US-based specialist investor Learn Capital.
Learn, which contributed $10.6 million to the round, is making its first lead investment in India. Lightspeed India Partners and Advisors, CM Ventures, Better Capital, and AngelList India also participated. It follows a $3.5 million round in last year from Lightspeed, Better, and Titan Capital.
Teachmint launched in May 2020 as a mobile-first, video-first, teaching platform that helps teachers digitize classrooms, as well as automate assessments, admin, and fee collection processes. The company also facilitates content delivery and enhanced student engagement through various workflow tools. It claims to be the largest live-teaching platform outside China.
The platform was built with a focus on regional customization and is available in 10 Indian languages other than English. It helps teachers create their own businesses from scratch in areas such as K-12 tutoring, test prep, and extra-curricular learning. Teaching is highly localized in India in terms of languages. About 80% of secondary-level students study in Hindi using vernacular media, with curricula reflecting their teachers’ own unique styles and pedagogy.
Users include teachers, private tutors, coaching operators, and freelance educators across 1,500 Indian cities and towns. The idea is that they are not limited to their existing students but can access larger student bases across the country, through personalized websites, public streaming, and social media integration. Teachmint plans to use the fresh capital for hiring top talent, R&D on teaching technology, strategic acquisitions, and further market expansion.
“From the Learn Capital team’s first meeting with Teachmint’s co-founders several months ago, it was clear that their collective team had meticulously architected an end-to-end, multi-modal, and best-in-class solution enabling teachers in India to instantly and seamlessly digitize their classrooms,” Vinit Sukhija, a partner at Learn said in a statement. “Now with over 700,000 teachers, Teachmint has become India’s leading online teaching platform”
