Chinese environmental protection business raises $16m
Addor Capital has led a RMB110 million ($15.5 million) Series A round for Shandong-based Pengda Environmental Protection Technology.
Founded in 2012, Pengda manufactures carbon-based materials used as purification agents in areas including water, air, and gas. The company has an annual production capacity of 26,000 tons.
Pengda claims to have achieved a technological breakthrough in hazardous materials processing that allows it to provide a closed-loop service across manufacturing, recycling, and regeneration. It will use the latest investment to construct a new facility that can recycle and reutilize 120,000 tons per year of the hazardous waste that comes from the production of activated carbon.
China is the world’s largest producer and exporter of activated carbon, a material usually derived from charcoal that is used in a range of industrial applications, including water, air, and gas purification. This industry is responsible for millions of tons of hazardous waste a year, which is normally burned or put into a landfill.
China saw substantial progress in its environment protection agenda in 2019, according to the latest government data. Good air quality days hit 82% in 2019 in 337 cities, and the share of surface water rated as good quality increased by 3.9% year-on-year. The amount of worst-rated water decreased by 3.3% during the same period.
