Australian online tutoring start-up gets $14m Series A
Cluey Learning, an Australian start-up that provides personalized online tuition services for elementary through high school students, has raised A$20 million ($14 million) in Series A funding from Allectus Capital and Thorney Investment Group.
The company was founded in 2018 by Mark Rohald, who previously established and ran several education businesses in Australia, the UK, Canada, and South Africa. He is now a partner at Quartet Ventures, an Australian VC firm led by three entrepreneurs who have helped build companies such as Oporto, Rebel Sports, Barbeques Galore, Open Colleges, and Think Education.
Cluey, which has raised A$31 million since inception, offers tuition in English, mathematics, and chemistry for children aged 3-18. Its content is mapped to the Australian syllabus and supports exam preparation, fills learning gaps, builds confidence, and offers additional support for school-based education. All sessions are recorded so they can be reviewed by children and parents.
“The school classroom concept is over 100 years old – it’s a factory model. It’s very hard for one teacher to tailor learning to every child’s specific needs, prior knowledge, and interests. Cluey enhances and complements school-based learning – we partner with parents and students to support each individual child’s learning journey,” said Rohald, who also serves as Cluey’s CEO, in a statement.
Allectus – which is managed by ICM, an international fund manager and corporate finance adviser headquartered in Bermuda – makes technology investments, primarily in Asia Pacific and the UK. Thorney Investment Group is an Australia-listed investment firm.
