India’s Unacademy raises $21m Series C round
Indian online education platform Unacademy has raised a $21 million Series C round of funding from a group of investors led by Sequoia Capital India.
Existing backers SAIF Partners, Nexus Venture Partners and Blume Ventures also participated, according to a release. The new capital will be used to grow the platform’s teaching staff and expand its course offerings, along with strengthening the core product and technology team.
Along with its free courses, Unacademy also plans to invest in its recently launched Plus product, a paid offering that includes private discussion forums, live video classes and personalized interactions with educators. Since the launch of the Plus courses last October the company has recorded sixfold growth in monthly revenue.
Unacademy was founded in 2015 and offers educational videos to help students prepare for examinations and improve their speaking and writing skills. As of last month, the platform had more than 3,000 active educators and its free video lessons had been watched over 40 million times.
All four of the Series C investors participated in Unacademy’s $11.5 million Series B round last September. Blume and Nexus also led the company’s INR300 million ($4.4 million) Series A round in January 2017.
