NSSK acquires Japanese publishing group
Japanese private equity firm NSSK has acquired Bunkasha Publishing, a domestic media group focused on manga comics in both print and digital formats.
NSSK invested via a special purpose vehicle and has not disclosed the deal size. It typically targets businesses with enterprise values from $30-200 million with equity checks ranging from $10-50 million per deal.
Bunkasha’s core products include horror, suspense and romance titles marketed to women aged 20-40 years old. It also markets fashion magazines targeted at females of 10-30 years. Under NSSK's ownership, the company plans to implement global best practices in accounting, finance, compliance and governance measures as well as more effective content accumulation and management.
According to a statement, profitability improvements will be pursued through an acceleration of plans to digitize the company’s library of content. At the same time, revenue sources will be diversified by expanding the media mix and distribution channels. Bunkasha’s existing management team will continue to lead the company.
Founded in 2014, NSSK invests primarily in Japan-based small to medium-sized companies seeking business succession and global expansion opportunities. It focuses on demographic shifts related to the aging domestic population, including healthcare, leisure and hospitality.
