ClearVue commits $30m to Shanghai juice maker
China consumer-focused GP ClearVue Partners has invested $30 million in CHIC Fresh, a Shanghai-based high pressure processing (HPP) juice maker.
CHIC produces coconut water under its INVO brand and supplies global retailers including Wegman's, BHG, Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe's. The company has adopted HPP technology, which is a cold pasteurization technique aiming at producing fresh nutritious juice without using chemical preservatives.
Due to the absence of heat in the process, the nutritional properties of the food are maintained. The process also extends the shelf life of the coconut water to 150 days and other premium and functional juices to 90 days, which is longer than its competitors' shelf life of 30 days.
"In China, demand for premier goods that enhance a personal sense of health and wellness - such as healthy snacks and beverages, rather than daily necessities will accelerate. The lion's share of the consumption growth will come from the ‘post-80s generation' with a higher per capita GDP," Harry Hui, founding managing partner of ClearVue, said in a statement. "CHIC Fresh's product and technology will serve this fast growing segment."
CHIC will use the proceeds to scale up the business and also leverage ClearVue's sector knowledge and network.
ClearVue targets consumer deals in Greater China, specifically in the food and beverage, consumer products and consumer mobile sectors. A few weeks ago, it led a $10 million Series C round for Yummy Express, a Beijing-based start-up that provides logistics services for online-to-offline (O2O) food-ordering platforms.
