Hong Kong launches start-up program
Hong Kong has launched a start-up program intended to attract local and global entrepreneurs to set up or expand their businesses in the city.
The StartmeupHK Venture Program, which was announced by Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), will culminate in a week-long event in December in which 12 shortlisted finalists will be awarded access to business partners, financial capital, market knowledge and marketing opportunities. Winners could also receive free advisory services such as accounting, legal, design and branding services.
It is open to any first-time or serial entrepreneur interested in taking an early- to growth-stage business global via Hong Kong.
Simon Galpin, director-general of InvestHK, said that in the past 2-3 years, a rising number of entrepreneurs have set up businesses in Hong Kong; the percentage of such projects in InvestHK's portfolio has risen from less than 10% to over 15% in 2013.
Established in 2000, InvestHK is responsible for facilitating foreign direct investment and helping overseas and mainland businesses set up in Hong Kong. It completed over 2,900 investment projects, worth a total of HK$76 billion ($10 million) in the first half of the year, creating more than 33,000 new jobs.
Earlier this week South Korea launched an initiatives to grant start-up visas to foreign entrepreneurs in a bid to stimulate inbound investment.
