Orion, BNP form Asia alternatives partnership
BNP Paribas will take a minority stake in a newly-established partnership with Asia-based private equity and real estate player Orion Partners. They plan to launch funds together to meet growing client demand for exposure to alternatives in the region.
BNP will invest through BNP Paribas Capital Partners, an alternative and incubation unit under its asset management arm, BNP Paribas Investment Partners (BNPP IP). Orion will continue to operate under its existing leadership team and remain independent in its businesses and investment decisions.
The partnership will rely on BNPP IP's global distribution platform to market alternative investment products to retail and institutional investors, while Orion will contribute local specialist expertise.
"Orion Partners has had a strong long-standing relationship with BNPP IP and it is the perfect partner to enhance our specialist alternative investment business through product innovation and access to premier international distribution channels," T.K. Chiang, managing partner and co-founder of Orion, said in a statement.
Orion, which was founded in 2000, had more than $1 billion in assets under management as of September 2015. In addition to real estate and private equity strategies, the firm is developing infrastructure credit and hedge funds businesses. LPs in its funds include pension funds, fund-of-funds, family offices and high net worth individuals.
BNPP IP had EUR509 billion ($548 billion) in assets under management as of September, with 3,000 employees in 35 countries, including 700 investment professionals. BNP Paribas Capital Partners oversees assets of EUR5 billion.
