Thailand’s aCommerce raises $5m from existing backers
Existing investors including Ardent Capital, Indonesian conglomerate Sinarmas and Inspire Ventures have committed $5 million to aCommerce, a Thailand-based e-commerce services provider.
The funding round is preparation for a larger Series B round scheduled for the second half of this year, aCommerce said in a statement. The start-up previously raised $10.7 million in June 2014, which represented the largest Series A for a Thailand-based venture and one of the largest Series A rounds in Southeast Asia.
ACommerce was launched in 2013 with backing from Ardent Labs, which operates much like a VC accelerator. It seeks to address the scaling problems in e-commerce by providing end-to-end solutions in Southeast Asia. The company now has offices and distribution centers in Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Singapore.
The start-up has ambitions that stretch beyond being a fulfillment and delivery services, which account for about 60% of its entire business. It wants to provide technology platforms for e-commerce operators, building warehouse and transportation management systems that support local infrastructure.
The new capital will go towards marketing, new technology platforms, and warehouse expansion in Indonesia. As a result, the Indonesian team is expected to exceed 300 people.
"The demand for aCommerce's services in Indonesia has exceeded forecasts thanks to the speed and growth of heady new entrants to e-commerce in Indonesia and major clients signed," the company said.
