Vertex Ventures appoints India head
Vertex Ventures, a VC firm controlled by Singapore’s Temasek Holdings, has appointed Ben Mathias as managing director and head of India. He joins from New Enterprise Associates.
Based out of Vertex's office in Bangalore, Mathias will be part of the team covering India, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. He will continue the firm's strategy of backing digital consumer, enterprise software and healthcare businesses, usually participating in Series A rounds.
Vertex's India portfolio currently includes GreenDust, FirstCry, Yatra and Busybees. Its most recent commitment was to babies and children-focused retailer FirstCry, which received a $26 million Series D round in February led by Valiant Capital Partners. Vertex re-upped, having led the Series C in early 2014.
"We are excited to have Ben join us to head our India investments. Ben has had many years of management and venture capital investment experience and brings insights that are very valuable to start-ups. We look forward to unlocking a lot more potential in the Indian start-up ecosystem under his leadership," Kee Lock Chua, group CEO and president of Vertex Holdings, said in a statement.
Created in 1988, Vertex has established a family of venture capital funds across Asia, Israel and the US. These vehicles have received capital from the parent group, Vertex Venture Holdings, and from third-party investors. Earlier this month, Vertex announced that it would use a new $600 million allocation from Temasek to invest in Vertex family funds focusing on the US, Israel and China.
