Tencent, Yunfeng back China social-networking site for doctors
Tencent Holdings and Yunfeng Capital have committed $40 million in a Series B round of funding to Medlinker, a Chinese social-networking platform for doctors.
Medlinker was set up by a team of medical professionals and former employees from Tencent and NetEase last year. It is exclusively for the use of doctors and healthcare professionals. Members can preserve their anonymity and share feelings about their professions and lives, as well as seek medical advice from one another. Medlinker claims to have more than 100,000 practitioners on its platform.
The new capital will be used to acquire users, with a view to increasing registered base from to 500,000 in the coming months, Shirui Wang, Medlinker's CEO, told Tencent QQ News. The company also plans to launch business management tools for medical centers.
Tencent previously invested $70 million in dxy.com, a Chinese networking and information-sharing site for healthcare professionals. This was followed by a $100 million round for Guahao.com, a healthcare information portal.
Five months ago, Yunfeng Capital teamed up with Shenzhen Cowin Capital, New Horizon Capital and Hunan Haijie Healthcare Investment to invest RMB200 million ($32 million) in a Series B funding round for mobile healthcare app developer Huakang Mobile Healthcare.
