Kalaari leads funding round for YourStory
Indian tech business news website YourStory has raised a Series A round led by Kalaari Capital, with participation from Qualcomm Ventures, Ratan Tata and T.V. Mohandas Pai.
In a statement, YourStory said it will use the funds to support the upcoming local-language version of its website, planned to launch in October. The new site will post content aimed at local readers, using such Indian languages as Hindi, Telugu, Bangla, Kannada, Tamil and Marathi. It will also allow users to create their own posts, including multimedia content such as audio and video.
YourStory's statement did not disclose the size of the funding round, but founder and Chief Editor Shradha Sharma told VC Circle that it was between $3 million and $5 million. As part of the investment, Kalaari co-founder and Managing Director Vani Kola will join YourStory's board.
YourStory was founded in 2008 by Sharma, previously an assistant vice president of CNBC TV18 and brand advisor at the Times of India. In addition to posting news content, the site has also organized more than 220 events for Indian start-ups.
Kalaari, founded in 2011, seeks early-stage investment opportunities in tech-oriented Indian companies. Its recent activity includes a $2.5 million Series A investment in social media app Crowdfire this March, and a $3 million Series B round, with Mayfield, for travel planning site TripHobo.
