GGV, Shunwei invest in China education site Xiaozhan Jiaoyu
GGV Capital and Shunwei Capital Partners have co-led a $29 million Series B round of funding for Xiaozhan Jiaoyu, a Chinese online education platform that focuses on students studying abroad.
Founded in 2011, Xiaozhan, which operates online platform Zhan.com, provides services for students preparing for entrance exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and GRE. It offers online practice tests, forums, registration information and other study materials. In addition, it sells live tutoring lessons with 600 full-time teachers.
Jenny Lee, managing partner of GGV, said she was drawn by Xiaozhan's one-to-one online teaching method that is able to cater to the specific needs of students.
Xiaozhan plans to get more involved in the education business abroad, Haoping Wang, CEO of the company, said in a statement. The new funding will be used to recruit additional staff and improve users' learning experience.
Online education is increasingly popular among VC investors and strategic investors. Earlier this week, Banyan Capital led a Series A round for Genshuixue, a platform that allows users to find personal tutors online. CMC Capital Partners and New Horizon Capital recently co-led a $60 million Series D round for Yuantiku, an online database of test exams for college and high school students, while ChinaEquity led a Series B round for Juesheng.com, an education-focused online marketplace.
Last year, Hao Capital, DCM and Baidu invested in a Series C round for Beijing Wanxue Education, which specializes in test preparation services for postgraduate entrance exams and civil service exams. CITIC Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Study & Share, a Chinese test preparation and training business dedicated to the construction sector.
