Abraaj invests in Thai education provider
The Abraaj Group has acquired an undisclosed stake in KPN Academy, an out-of-school education service provider in Thailand.
This is Abraaj's sixth investment from its second Southeast Asia fund, a $250 million vehicle which that closed in March last year.
Established in 2000, KPN Academy has evolved from a music education provider into a multi-educational group. It has more than 103 centers across Thailand, offering a variety of subjects including mathematics, chemistry, physics and social sciences. Its music education subsidiary - KPN Music - has more than 500,000 students enrolled in its programs.
Abraaj plans to leverage its expertise in the education sector to drive KPN's growth. Previous investments in the space include Dubai-based K-12 education provider GEMS Education and Orca Global, an English-language education provider based in Singapore. The latter is still a portfolio company.
"The rising middle class in Asia, and beyond, is increasingly looking to supplement their family's education with out-of-school services. The education sector's attractive market dynamics, together with KPN Academy's well-established market position, therefore, provide a robust platform for the next phase of its growth," Srisant Chitvaranund, managing director at Abraaj, said in a statement.
Abraaj operates over 25 offices covering Istanbul, Mexico City, Dubai, Mumbai, Nairobi and Singapore. It currently managed $7.5 billion across more than 20 sector and country-specific funds.
