Anthem Asia makes first Myanmar investment
Anthem Asia, a new private equity firm based in Yangon, Myanmar, has closed its first deal in the country, investing around $1 million in office rental firm Hintha Business Centers (HBC).
The company runs serviced offices in the centre of Yangon - with 13 private offices available to rent on a weekly or monthly basis, starting at $1800 a month. The company also offers a $10-an-hour "hot desk rental" service as well as conference rooms and a business lounge. This latest investment is being used to develop the firm's 6,000 square feet flagship facility.
Anthem was set up in early 2012 by Josephine Price and Genevieve Heng, both former executives at CLSA Capital Partners Asia. The firm focuses on domestic businesses in sectors such as consumer goods and services, tourism and travel, manufacturing, distribution, logistics and agri-business.
"We are looking at opportunities requiring first phase investments of between $100,000 and about $1.5 million," says Price. "Many small- and medium-sized businesses could not effectively absorb greater initial quantities of capital. Many businesses require expertise and advice, more than capital, which they can raise from family and diaspora sources."
Anthem's maiden fund has already raised an undisclosed amount, bringing it to its first close. Its shareholders include its principals, individual Asian investors and a family office.
