McDonald's picks IDG's Nguyen to bring brand to Vietnam
McDonald's has appointed Henry Nguyen, managing partner at IDG Ventures Vietnam, to assist the burger chain in taking its brand into the country for the first time ever.
Nguyen, who will be the "developmental licensee" for McDonalds in Vietnam, set up IDG Ventures Vietnam in 2004 having previously worked as a technology equity research analyst at Goldman Sachs and co-founded S2S Medical Publishing and Medschool.com. He graduated from Harvard University and later obtained an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management in Chicago.
In a statement, McDonald's said that Nguyen was appointed following a rigorous selection process that began years ago.
"I have been a big fan of McDonald's my whole life and have had so many wonderful experiences there, including one of my first jobs when I was a teenager," said Nguyen. "I have dreamed of one day opening a McDonald's restaurant in my native country ever since my return to Vietnam more than a decade ago."
The global fast-food brand is looking to open its first outlet in Ho Chi Minh City, making Vietnam the 38th Asian country McDonald's has opened in. The development comes just five months after US coffee chain Starbucks opened its first outlet in Ho Chi Minh, increasing its Asian presence to 12 countries.
"As we grow our presence in the Asia region, we are looking for partners with a blend of strong business acumen and a unique understanding of our Brand," said Dave Hoffmann, president of McDonald's Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region. "Henry Nguyen is that ideal business partner who has an impressive business background and proven track record in driving new business ventures in Vietnam."
