Indonesia’s Berrybenka gets funding from Gree Ventures
Gree Ventures, the VC arm of social Japanese social networking giant Gree, has completed its third investment in Indonesia, providing a Series A round of funding to fashion-focused e-commerce start-up Berrybenka. The size of the investment was not disclosed.
Berrybenka, which last year received seed funding from East Ventures, will use the fresh capital to expand its product line, improve logistics and boost marketing expenditure. There are plans to develop the payment options available on the site and also launch smart phone applications. A longer-term objective is to expand into other countries in Southeast Asia.
The company has also appointed Jason Laumuda, co-founder of Disdus, the Indonesian group buying site that was acquired by Groupon, as president director. He was previously a member of Berrybenka's advisory board.
"I truly believe that fashion is one of the biggest market opportunities in the Indonesian e-commerce landscape," Lamuda said. "When you look at more developed regions such as Europe, China, Japan and India, there always existed leading local fashion e-commerce players. Similarly, we aspire to become the leading fashion e-commerce player in Indonesia, built locally."
Berrybenka was founded in 2011 and now partners with more than 250 local and international brands. It sells women's clothing and accessories, as well as children's clothing. The site is said to attract more than 600,000 unique visitors every month.
GREE Ventures has $25 million earmarked for deployment in Southeast Asia, most of which will go to e-commerce and mobile companies. It has previously invested in price comparison site PriceArea and e-commerce platform Bukalapak.
