KKR adds two India firms to green portfolio program
KKR India portfolio companies Bharti Infratel and Dalmia Bharat Cement are among the new additions to the private equity firm’s green portfolio program. The initiative, which now covers about 30% of KKR’s global portfolio, is designed to identify opportunities to improve companies’ financial and environmental performance.
Bharti Infratel and Dalmia Bharat were two of seven inductees to the green portfolio program this week. The announcement marked the fourth anniversary of the program, which began as a partnership between KKR and Environmental Defense Fund.
Assisted by KKR Capstone, participating companies implement analytic tools to monitor greenhouse gas emissions, waste and chemicals output, and water and forest resources use, among other things. As of December 2011, the companies involved have saved $365 million in operating costs through their environmental efforts, prevented 810,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and avoided the production of 2.2 million tons of waste and the use of 300 million liters of water.
KKR purchased a 2.5% stake in Bharti Infratel, the telecom infrastructure subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, in 2008, paying $250 million. Axa Private Equity took a minority stake as part of the same transaction. Dalmia Bharat Cement was added to the KKR portfolio in 2010, with the acquisition of an approximately 20% stake for $164 million.
