Leopard Capital takes 33.7% stake in Cambodian MFI
The Cambodia-based private equity firm announced that it has invested an undisclosed sum in Intean Poalroath Rongroeurng (IPR), a Cambodian microfinance firm, in return for a 33.7% equity stake.
According to IPR's CEO Hort Bun Song, the capital injection will be used to fund new loans and update the group's information technology systems. Launched in 2005, IPR specializes in loans to rural rice farmers, financing tools such as seeds, fertilizer and equipment. It specifically deals in working and investment loans held for between one and 36 months, pending the loan's classification.
Leopard Capital focuses on emerging markets in Southeast Asia. In August, news surfaced that the firm sought $50 million to launch a fund focused on Cambodian- and Laos-related investments, its second vehicle targeting the markets. The firm currently manages the $34 million Leopard Cambodia Fund L.P., which launched in April 2008 and claims to be the first‐ever private equity fund for Cambodia.
